Election wrapup
(Disclaimer: I voted for neither Bush nor Gore. I thought neither one of them would be right for the country.)
14 December 2000
We are now in for one of two things for the next four years:
A. A backlash -- though which direction is 'back' is hard to say because even nationwide no strong preference for either one of these clowns has been expressed B. A reign of terrorI don't know whether one is more likely than the other.
We've been slipping steadily toward a police state for the past fifteen or twenty years or so, much of that time under a Democratic and supposedly "liberal" president. It may be that a president who talks about empowerment etc. can get away with that, while one who claims to be a "compassionate conservative" -- a phrase that implies things about conservatism that I think George W. doesn't intend -- cannot.
It will be particularly interesting to see what happens when the newspapers actually count the Florida ballots by hand; it may be that the Dempublicans have finally managed, by focus-grouping every issue and by concentrating so hard on the chewy middle, to achieve a statistical tie.
